But just before we leave Craig decides he needed new tires, as there was a good chance we might encounter snow enroute. So off to Kaltire where they installed 6 new tires - Michelin LTX MS2.
The wheel alignment could not be done as the Unity was too big for their equipment. But the Michelin Tires, inflated to 75psi made a tremendous difference in the handling and ride compared to the Continental Vanco original tires; which by the way in our opinion were terrible in snow.

Leg One Begins
Coldstream to Yorkton
15 hours and 1500 kilometers
April 15 - 19, 2015
Leg One: Coldstream BC to Yorkton SK |
On our way! |
Highway 1 Wild Animal Crossings - Lake Louise Alberta |
Highway 1 - Trans Canada Rocky Mountain Scenery |
Olympic Ski Jump Venue for 1988 Olympic Games - Winter That Is ! |
We, when it is said we drove, in actual fact it is Jan who is driving the entire journey due to Craig's continued back condition!
Our Unity parked on rest area Highway 1 East of Calgary The beginning of wide open skies and flat prairies |
Abandoned Homestead |
Swift Current Saskatchewan, Tourist Rest Stop! Big TeePee! |
Prairie Weather Vane - full sized helicopter! Wow... |
The drive was relaxed with little traffic and stops along the way. One of those stops was Mortlach, Saskatchewan just off of Highway 1 between Swift Current and Moose Jaw.
Mortlach is a small village in the Wheatlands area of SK and has a population of 254 people. We parked along the railway and had lunch, by this time of day the wind had picked up but the sun was shining and it was warm out.

Held Up By Farm Equipment Outside Fort Qu'Apelle, SK
Interestingly enough when we were travelling on Highway 10 from Fort Qu'Appelle to Yorkton the surface of the road was very rough and we were bumping along. We are sure having pumped up air pressure of 75psi maybe did not help.
All of a sudden Jan asked "what is that on the windshield". Geez, a crack in the windshield. Craig did not think it was from a rock but from stress caused by the wind (which now had got very blustery and the rough roads. So he called our friendly service advisor Chris at Mercedes back home. He said, it should be from a rock as he has never heard of a stress crack before!
Well Chris was right, there was a very, very small rock impact just next to the edge of the windshield....
We always enjoy our time in Yorkton, SK. Our good friends Dave & Sonja have introduced us to their friends and as such our circle has grown. This trip did not allow us the time to visit with these other friends but maybe the next time.
Always on our visit we spend time at the old homestead. It is the highlight of our visits to Yorkton.

View from the homestead! Ordered from Sears Catalogue and built in early 1900's |
Sitting in the sun having a drink with best of friends! |
Does not get much better than this! |
Our three day visit in Yorkton with great friends Dave and Sonja was too short!
Jan always feels serene and relaxed after visiting the old homestead!
Holistic and Peaceful!
