Leg One (c) Navajo Bridge to Kanab, UT
9th April, 2016
We left Navajo Bridge, AZ on Route 89-A on our way to Kanab, UT. This stretch of scenic Byway is also unique and of course, the closer we drove to Utah the more the scenery changes!
What was nice about this drive is you are right in the spectacular scenery. When we were at the Grand Canyon, Craig was not able to see any of the canyon as his back kept him at the campsite.
The drive on US Route 89 and 89A afforded him to see all of this from the seat of our LTV Unity motorhome!
On to Kanab |
We left the Navajo Bridge site and headed west on Route 89A to Kanab. Just after getting on the highway, Jan who is the driver, noticed that we were not getting any power out of the Mercedes Sprinter!
She had her foot to the floor and her speed was slowly dropping from a maximum speed of 40mph, down to 30 and not getting any power! She downshifted but that almost stalled the engine, so Jan upshifted and found a place to pull over - which was harder said than done.
We pulled off the road, stopped and turned off the engine. We waited 3 or 4 minutes, started it up and tenuously we drove back on to the highway, luckily everything was fine?
Craig called our local Mercedes dealer back home, where we have a great service department. They advised to monitor the situation, drop in to a MB service and have it checked out.
This was a little concerning as the roads we were driving are in the middle of no where, no cell phone coverage and very little traffic.
(Note: when we kept driving and returned home, took our Unity in for service; it was determined that one of the computer cables for the fuel injection system had a loose pin on the connection end. Ordered/installed a new one in and we are good to go!)

Marble Canyon to Kanab, UT
There is a lot to see and do in this area, unfortunately we had to be back home in four days time. Take a look at this website for an idea as to what we missed:
Like being "IN" the Grand Canyon! |
The colors are amazing! |
We came across a pull-out area to the right of the highway. It had huge boulders strewn about! It looked like someone just tossed a load of these "rocks" down onto the earth!
These boulders were huge. |

We had to be careful not to bottom out! |

We loved how the road looks in this picture Lots of miles with no one around. |

Entering Utah! Heading Home. |
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For many years Kanab was one of the most isolated cities in the nation. It was cut off from the east by the Colorado River and could only be reached with difficulty by rough dirt roads stretching over the rough terrain of the Arizona Strip west toward Las Vegas, NV. A twenty three mile journey north to Orderville, UT took nearly four days. Perhaps this isolation is why Zane Gray lived in the town while writing his Riders of the Purple Sage in 1912. Today, Kanab is a scenic tourist town with a friendly western spirit where tens of thousands of tourists stop to enjoy the "Old West" quality of life each year. The history in Kanab comes alive in the architecture of the old homes and buildings of the community. From: Kanab.Utah.Gov
