Palm Desert to Salton Sea
On our way to Blythe, CA via Salton Sea: 22nd March 2016
This is well worth the detour and stop if you are headed east from the Palm Springs area. |
We left Dana and Carmen's and headed towards the Sulton Sea on CA-111 and of course had to pass the Oasis Date Gardens. You may recall this is one of Jan's favorite place, especially since she can get another date shake!
Great Place For Dates! We think the best! |
Jan, one happy date shaker, LOL! |
Lots of parking for your RV. |
This drive takes you through the "garden belt"
where most of produce is grown!
We saw a lot of these carrot haulers while in the Indio area! |

Bugs Bunny Would Be In Heaven! |
The Salton Sea
While driving from Indio to Blythe, CA we decided to take a side trip down CA-111 past the Salton Sea. This is a unique and interesting stop where you can view a short history video at the Salton Sea State Recreation Area; where you will find yourself at an elevation of -228ft, yes that is right minus 228 feet sea level!
The Salton Sea's history is very interesting, the "sea shore" unique and not to be found anywhere else. The Salton Sea it is well worth the "short detour" if you find yourself in the Indio California area. It is well worth reading some history and the following excerpt:
In the spring of 1905, following extreme rains, the Colorado River flooded and blew out a weakly constructed irrigation canal. All efforts to seal the breach failed—for 18 months, the river continued to flood into the Salton Sink, filling it up with fresh water like an enormous shallow tub. The Southern Pacific Railroad, which had extensive rail interests in the area, jumped in and for two weeks stopped rail traffic in California in order to divert all rolling stock to Salton Sink. Two thousand workers dumped more than 3,000 specially constructed railroad cars full of boulders, wood, and....

Another bonus while heading east via CA-111 is to drive the CA-78t which will take you through the "North Algodones Dunes Wilderness" area; where you will witness amazing sculptures of shadows carving the sand dunes.

The visitor centre is at the Salton Sea State Recreation Area Well worth the stop |
The shore of the Salton Sea appears to be white sand or small pebble, but in reality it is an accumulation of dead marine life. Simply amazing but smelly!
Piles of dead fish washed ashore The water is more of a cess pool and only supports Tilapia |
This is how it is! |
More fish bones! |
You can see the dead barnacles beside this fish carcass. |
This is exactly how we found this fish carcass! |
This is really how it looks, not a place to water ski anymore! |
Lots of American White Pelicans |
Worth the stop - Salton Sea, CA |
The Salton Sea History needs to be understood to know what was, is and will be as this body of water impacts the environment, migratory birds and marine life.
