Spring 2016 - Headed South Leg Three

14th March 2016

Leg Three:  Jackpot, NV to Bishop, CA  7.5 hours 788kms

Day Three: Jackpot NV to Bishop CA
A lot of desert!

Yesterday we had stopped in Pendleton, OR at Les Schwab and had our tire fixed.  Well, at least we thought the problem was solved.

Today we woke to a soft tire, tire pressure was down 20 lbs.  Out came the air pump and filled up the tire.  We knew it was a slow leak so we broke camp and headed south.

The original plan was to keep heading south through Ely, NV and onto Las Vegas.  We made it to Ely when the Tire Monitoring system warned us we were loosing air at a faster rate than we had the day before.

The decision was made to alter our course and head to California; why you might ask?  Well, we had purchased the dually valve stems on-line from the Tire Man is in Ridgecrest, CA and have had ongoing issues due to the quality of installation by local tire shops.

We thought let's go to Ridgecrest, to the source of the dually valve stems, and have Chuck The Tire Man fix them.

What we did not think of is that it is a long way from Ely to Bishop, CA and that the distance is very sparsely populated Desert!

On our to way west from Ely to Bishop on Highway 6

Rest Stop along the way

Headed west on AZ-6 from Ely, NV to Bishop, CA we came upon a Toiyabe National Forest rest stop, which is 40kms east of Tonopah, AZ.
As a national forest, this was a bit of a mystery to us! We did find a couple of trees at this rest stop, 240kms east of Ely, NV. Not a whole lot of "Forest" here though, but maybe we were just looking in the wrong direction?
There is not much out this way, so be prepared to see long stretches of straight pavement, vista desert views and distant mountain ranges. Although we did pass an old abandoned airfield, south of NV-6, with rusting hangers and buildings along the way! Not sure what was, maybe an old military base?
We were in the middle of no where on Hwy 6 and the tire pressure was dropping when we came upon a service station at a cross roads in the middle of the desert.  The sign said "We fix tires - 24hrs a day".

We stopped and after chatting with the two fellows at the shop, and one of them wanting to place the jack under our generator, then under one of the holding tanks to lift up the motorhome!  We looked at one another and Craig said "hey, let's just top up with air and we will be on our way".  And that's what we did - very quickly we left!

Beautiful Cloud Formations

Sage Bruch for miles!

Scenery was beautiful.

Along the route were a number of abandoned homesteads

In this picture is someone's new homestead?
Interesting where people make their home.

Middle of the desert?

Along Hwy 6 areas of irrigation allowed
for the cultivation and farming?
Aerial view of Currant, Tonopath NV from Maps

We then came across an oil refiinery
They were pumping oil from the surrounding desert.

Long straight roads leading to somewhere?
Not a place to be if you have leaking tires!

We saw this in the middle of no where.

It was a huge Solar Farm!
Looked like something out of a James Bond Movie

The light area in the middle is some folks campaign?

Not sure what the attraction is?

When we crossed into California the effects of irrigation were evident

Every where was green where just a mile east it was brown desert!

We stayed at JC Mobile Ranch in Bishop
Nice place, walking distance to a great bakery and BBQ Shack

Erik Schat's Bakery, Bishop, CA

Bakery Delivery Van!

Some of the goodies to taste

Even more, this place was a wealth of goodies.
Must stop in Bishop.

As we were travelling over a weekend our attempts to call
Chuck "The  Tire Man"were not successful!

We are hoping he will be at work on Monday and have time for us!
